Law360’s 2023 MVP Awards have been announced – and Partner Todd Canni is one of just five lawyers from across the U.S. to be named in its Government Contracts category.

In an Oct. 6 article titled “MVP: BakerHostetler’s Todd J. Canni,” Law360 highlights a number of Canni’s impressive accomplishments, including a recent win for client Precision Metal Corp., a family-owned Defense Department (DOD) contractor. The company was threatened with debarment over late deliveries, according to the article, putting the company’s existence and the jobs of 50 employees at risk.

Canni told Law360 that he was “completely stunned” when the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) refused to schedule a meeting to discuss information that Canni and our client had provided to the agency, showing that late deliveries were largely outside Precision’s control – and that the company had taken steps to remedy the issues involved.

Scheduling a meeting is “required by due process under the law,” Canni recalled telling the DLA, but to no avail. That’s when the company went to court. Ultimately, Canni was able to help Precision “win precedent-setting decisions” and reach a settlement that allows it to remain a DOD supplier, according to the article.

“It’s very, very unusual for a case to end up with a public decision in federal court – I’ve never had that happen before” in 15 years of practice, Canni told Law360. Winning that case “is an incredible honor,” he added.

Other high-profile matters spotlighted in the article include Canni’s helping McLain & Co. Inc. secure an administrative agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation and representing AEG Fuels in a U.S. Court of Federal Claims case alleging collusion and bid-rigging related to the award of a massive DOD fuel supply contract in Djibouti.

Law360 chooses its MVPs each year from among hundreds of submissions, selecting attorneys who have distinguished themselves from their peers through high-stakes litigation, record-breaking deals and complex global matters.
