The summer associate program in Washington, D.C. offers law students firsthand experience working in a national law firm. Summer associates will have the opportunity to work on substantive assignments and collaborate one on one with attorneys.

The BakerHostetler Summer Associate Program in Washington, D.C. offers a 10-week unparalleled opportunity for law school students to immerse themselves in the vibrant legal landscape of the nation's capital. Tailored to provide a comprehensive and enriching experience, our program is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and insights necessary to thrive in their legal careers.

One of the hallmarks of our program is the hands-on experience it offers. Summer associates work on substantive assignments across a wide range of practice areas, allowing them to explore their interests and develop a well-rounded skill set. Our lawyers are very active in federal and state courts in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Summer associates are encouraged to attend depositions, hearings and trials with lawyers practicing in these jurisdictions. We also have a vibrant legislative practice, and summer associates frequently monitor or attend congressional hearings.

The D.C. office plans to hire 4 summer associates, including 1 first-year law student. Mentoring

At the core of our program is a commitment to mentorship and professional development. From day one, each summer associate is assigned a partner and an associate who serve as mentors, providing guidance, support and invaluable advice throughout the program. Mentors supervise work assignments and answer any questions that may come up. They also provide insight to the firm as well as hands-on guidance on how to succeed as a summer associate. These mentorship relationships foster a collaborative and nurturing environment where summer associates can learn from experienced attorneys and gain a deeper understanding of the legal profession.

Work Assignments

The goal of the summer program is to provide summer associates with real world experience. Our work coordinator will work with summer associates to appoint assignments according to their preferred practice areas, workload capacity and any conflicting deadlines. This approach allows summer associates to investigate various areas of interest and practice groups, enriching their understanding and skills.

Throughout the program, summer associates receive ongoing feedback and evaluations to help them track their progress and identify areas for growth. Attorneys provide constructive feedback on assignments, offering guidance and support to help summer associates maximize their potential and achieve their professional goals. In addition to work assignments, summer associates have the opportunity to participate in the following experiences:
