The Los Angeles Summer Associate Program is designed to give law students a realistic look into our practices with opportunities to learn what associate life is like and exposure to our greatest asset—our people.

The Los Angeles summer associate program is 10 weeks long, typically starting in May and concluding by the end of July. During this time, students will participate in firmwide and local trainings where they will learn important skills essential to be a successful attorney.&nbsp;

We strive to provide a balance of interesting and challenging work coupled with fun and exciting social events. Our summer class is comprised of predominantly second-year law students who are at the top of their classes.

The Los Angeles office plans to hire 2 summer associates. Work Assignments

Summer associates work on projects assigned directly by various lawyers in the office. Summer associates enter our unassigned program, giving them exposure to the various practice groups and areas that we have to offer. The projects are real work assignments, identical to those that would be given to associates and are not limited to any type of work or practice area. A past summer associate commented, “[The work was] interesting, educational, intense at times and so much fun. I feel like I got a sense of how it is to play on Baker’s team. I got great insight into the firm, its people and its work.” Summer associates in previous years completed the following projects:

Training

Training is a critical component in every attorney’s professional development. We have an extensive summer associate writing program, where summer associates will complete at least one 8-10 page memoranda that will be used and considered in actual cases. Each summer associate receives detailed feedback on their writing throughout the program. Recent training sessions have included:

Mentoring

We assign a partner to supervise the summer associates and help them manage their workloads. Each summer associate is also paired with a mentor lawyer. Mentors assist their mentees in acclimating to the firm and answer questions regarding assignments, the summer program or any other questions that may arise during the summer. A past summer associate said the following about their mentor: “From the beginning, I knew I had a person to go to if I ever needed advice or had a question. Over the course of the summer, I developed a great relationship with my mentor as well as my advisor. Both relationships meant so much to me."

Social Events

Just as our summer associates will experience hard work, they will also enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of BakerHostetler. The social calendar is designed to enable our summer associates and lawyers to get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere and to acquaint out-of-towners with the Los Angeles area.
