BakerHostetler and Kinetic Partners Donation Presentation Ceremony at Newly-Opened Manhattan Family Justice Center

Press Releases / May 12, 2014

New York, New York – May 12, 2014 – BakerHostetler and Kinetic Partners delivered donations from a multi-month drive for the 2014 Clean Slate Initiative, designed to collect items needed by adults and children leaving abusive living environments and starting over with the help of the New York City Family Justice Center, Manhattan (MFJC), an initiative of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV). OCDV Commissioner Rosemonde Pierre-Louis joined the MFJC Executive Director Hannah Pennington in receiving the donations and welcoming representatives from the law firm and the global financial services advisory firm at the new center, which opened on March 12, 2014.

“The Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence is grateful for the generous donations from BakerHostetler and Kinetic Partners,” said Commissioner Pierre-Louis. “These types of public-private partnerships help enrich the assistance we are able to provide both parents and their children at our Family Justice Centers.”

“The Family Justice Centers often find themselves in need of basic necessities for clients and their children who often come to us directly after fleeing their homes with very few essential belongings,” said Ms. Pennington. “This partnership is a natural extension of the firm’s existing pro bono legal services and demonstrates their understanding that our clients are in crisis and their needs go well beyond the courtroom.”

The Clean Slate Initiative was founded in 2011 by BakerHostetler’s New York Women’s Steering Committee as part of their ongoing support of BakerHostetler’s corporate partnership with HerJustice, to which BakerHostetler provides financial as well as pro bono support.

“The HerJustice partnership led to our introduction to the amazing, comprehensive services being offered by the New York City Family Justice Centers to those in need of protection from domestic violence,” stated Elizabeth Ann Smith, BakerHostetler partner and HerJustice Corporate Partner representative. “BakerHostetler’s New York office wanted very much to add to our pro bono work and participate in actual material support of women who seek help in crisis, often leaving everything behind when they do.”

BakerHostetler associate Natacha Carbajal, a HerJustice Junior Advisory Board member added, “The creation of the Clean Slate Initiative was the result of dialogue between BakerHostetler, HerJustice and the NYC Family Justice Centers. After seeing how impactful the initial Clean Slate Initiative was, we kept moving forward and created the 2012 We Have Your Back backpack drive, which brought together BakerHostetler and many of its corporate partners including AlixPartners, DOAR Litigation Counseling, Duff & Phelps, FTI Consulting, James Mintz Group, K2 Intelligence, oLo Brand Group and Robert Half Legal. Together we delivered 150 fully- outfitted backpacks to the New York City Family Justice Center, Bronx and Brooklyn, for distribution to their clients' children in time for the start of the 2012 school year. We are inspired by the work of the NYC Family Justice Centers and look forward to continued collaborations with them in the future.”

Joel Cohen, a Director with Kinetic Partners' Forensic and Dispute Advisory team, said, “We at Kinetic Partners are thrilled to have been involved with this initiative. It is our pleasure and our responsibility to help those in need within the community where we both live and work. Our firm is committed to the partnership with BakerHostetler and the important initiatives of HerJustice and the NYC Family Justice Centers. We believe that the success of the Clean Slate Initiative and the wonderful work done by the MFJC will impact the lives of families across the greater New York City area. We look forward to continuing this partnership with HerJustice and BakerHostetler to deliver the tools and support to help distressed families in need.”
